Changing a Button Closure from Back to Front

Sometimes, you have the perfect pattern for a look that you want but the closure is in the wrong spot.  Most dresses have back closures, but it’s actually REALLY easy to flip it to the front with very little work.  Here’s how to do it.

Take the pattern you want to alter and print it out.  The part with the buttons is the part not cut on the fold.  Here, the back is on the right and the front is on the left.  We’re going to flip the back closure to the front in just a few simple steps.Screen Shot 2020-01-13 at 2.44.32 PM

Put the front over the back piece and line up the side seams and shoulders.  Now draw a line on the back piece where the fold line is.

cut that piece off and move the pattern pieces apart.

Next, slide the piece you cut off over to the other piece

Tape the piece to the pattern and trim off the part that’s sticking out above the neckline.  (If you’ve moved a front closure to the back, you may need to add a little paper to extend the piece to match the neckline.)

Only one more step and you’re done.  Move that fold marking over to the other piece.

And you’re done!

I told you it was easy!
